In Memory of a Departed Comrade
It is with deep sorrow that the Remember and Preserve Association announces the passing of Eduard Markov, a founding member of the Association, valued friend, and wonderful person. Eduard was born in 1932 in Odessa, into the family of a Soviet Air Force officer who later participated in WWII. After returning from evacuation in Siberia and completing high school, Eduard studied at the Odessa Institute of Marine Fleet Engineers. After graduating, he worked at the Danube Shipping Company in Izmail, and later at the Maritime Central Design Bureau in Odessa. In the early 1960s Markov moved to Leningrad, where he began working at the Central Boiler and Turbine Institute while simultaneously pursuing a post-graduate degree. He became a leading specialist in gas turbines. He was also a board member of the "Square" jazz club, and translated both scholarly articles and science fictions books from English to Russian. In 1979, Eduard and his family applied to emigrate to Israel and were refused. Deprived of his right to work in his specialty, Eduard took a job as a stoker in the boiler room of a public bathhouse. He actively participated in the refusenik life of Leningrad, regularly meeting with emissaries from Western Jewish organizations. Upon making aliyah in 1989, Eduard settled in Haifa and worked as a lead engineer at the Israel Electric Company. He was passionate about tennis and skiing. Eduard was a founding member and deputy director of the "Remember and Save" Association, where his close friend, the now deceased Aba Taratuta, served as director. Markov was responsible for the Association's website, which became an important source of information in Russian and English about Soviet Jews' struggle to emigrate to Israel. Eduard Markov passed away on Saturday, January 25. Our condolences to his children and grandchildren. Director of the Remember and Save Association Dr. Michael Beizer |
